Next to the Scriptures themselves, there are a handful of books I'd recommend. This is one of them.
Phrases that stand out in scripture are brought to life and clarity by Brother Lawrence. If you have been led to wonder about what it means to pray continually, you may find you answer here.
I had seen this book quoted over and over in other books. I now see why. Brother Lawrence was definitely a man of God. This translation puts the words in today's language that send the message right to the heart. I kept my reading to a chapter each morning so that it could sink in. I will now start that process all over again as it has had that much of an impact on me. I know I will continue to learn more and draw even closer to God.
This is an excellent book. My second favorite in the spritual writings genre.
This translation includes all of the original text and maxims, and is true to the original American paper edition from 1895 (which I have).
The original edition's language is way over my head, and so I am grateful for this edition. By the fifth letter, I think, I began to have a relationship with Brother Lawrence. He has become a big brother in the faith. So much so that the last letter felt abrupt, cut short, and I felt a deep loss that he passed shortly after the last letter.
I was tempted to emulate Brother L, but that would've made a religion out of this and defeat the purpose. Instead, again, the Practice is simply, to practice.
Brother L found his relationship with his God. I will, too, through simplicity and wholehearted practice. Brother L was himself before God. I can be who I am before my Creator. There, maybe I'll find my path, my practice, establish my footing, and begin with my first steps.
The translator did a very good job of conveying the message in modern English and spirit. Should be read with joy and understanding that it is possible to have the same access to the living presence of God in our modern daily lives. God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow and He is as alive today as He was in the times of brother Lawrence.
I have read several translations of this classic and this was by far the most readable and engaging version. The addition of Brother Lawrence's spiritual maxims was was greatly appreciated as my older translations left this out.
Too often the archaic wording has interfered with the message but I don't think that will happen here. Read and be blessed by this humble servant's secrets to a rich spiritual life in God's prescence whether doing dishes, changing diapers, surrounded by noise, or immersed in any daily chore -- for it all can bring glory to God.
